Minnesota ranks 3rd highest well-being in U.S.

Posted: Updated:

Minnesota residents hold the third highest well-being in the nation behind Hawaii and Colorado, respectively, a Gallup poll says.

Daily survey results are tallied and conducted from Jan. through Dec. 2012, including interviews with more than 350,000 Americans and at least 1,000 residents in each state, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii.

The results are measured within the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which takes over 50 well-being criteria and is then calculated on a 0-100 scale. The Well-Being Index is ultimately an average of six sub-indexes:

  1. Life evaluation
  2. Emotional health
  3. Work environment
  4. Physical health
  5. Healthy behaviors
  6. Access to basic necessities

While Western and Midwestern states earned seven of the 10 highest scores overall, Southern states held the six lowest, as has been the pattern for the past five years. West Virginia came in last for the fourth year in a row.
