EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -

Police have arrested an El Mirage man on one count of child abuse.

When the mother of a 2-year-old girl picked up her up from the house of her biological father, James Patrick O'Mahoney, the mother noticed a bump on the girl's forehead. O'Mahoney, 24, explained the child fell off the bed, according to court documents.

But the victim's mother later found severe bruising to the child's buttocks and outer thighs, and bruising near her ribs and the tops of her feet. There was also a burn to the 2-year-old's left hand. When the mother asked her what happened, the little girl apparently said, "Daddy, he bust my butt."

The mother took the child to the hospital and called police. The doctor found the child's injuries were consistent with abuse.

O'Mahoney denied any involvement in causing the child's injuries, according to court documents. But a family member that lived in the same house reported the child had no injuries when she first arrived at the house, and later that day, she woke up to hear the child screaming, documents allege.

The family member told police she did notice the injuries on the child the following day.

O'Mahoney acknowledged being the primary caretaker, but when it came to the child's injuries, claimed neither he nor his family member caused them.
