Students get lesson in distracted driving

Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

Teens at an east valley high school watched a mock crash that played out on the football field in front of them -- getting an important lesson about while driving drunk or distracted -- a lesson that's a good reminder for everyone.

It was a disturbing visual at Red Mountain High School.  Thankfully, this was not real.

The message of the fake accident is very real: don't drink and drive, don't text and drive.  Focus on the road.

The seconds after the accident -- before Mesa fire crews arrived to help -- it was traumatic to watch and it's sinking in with these students.

Prom season is around the corner and this may save a life for a teen who may be pressured into drinking and driving.

"You have to learn to stand up to even your good friends when they want to do something stupid..it can end up like this tragedy," said Bronson Hixon.

This fake crash included the worst possible scenario -- a death. Even the medical examiner showed up.

Some decisions have deadly consequences.

"Personally, I made the goal not to do that and I think a lot of people in the stands have made the same decision," said another student.

These kids get it.

"In a case like this, you have to put your life before your friend's opinion and you have to say, I'd rather not die today."

Texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to get into a crash.  Kids who see their parents texting while driving are more likely to text while driving when they get behind the wheel.
