Thieves steal $1,600 from Scottsdale woman's account

Posted: Updated:

Identity thieves across the Atlantic Ocean targeted a Scottsdale woman and cleaned out her entire social security deposit.

She discovered the crime as she was trying to pay her rent.

Someone ripped her off, stealing $1,600 out of her bank account. She didn't think she would get the money back for months. But after FOX 10 got involved, she got some good news.

"I hope that I can get reimbursed right away. Cause this wasn't my fault," says Stephanie Carroll, fraud victim.

Stephanie Carroll is on disability and her monthly payment gets loaded on this card.

She knew something was up when she tried to pay her rent.

"When I went to go get my money order for my rent I couldn't access my account."

She called the company that runs her card and they said they couldn't do much.

"I said, ‘okay what can I do? This is my income for the month.' They said, ‘well I can send you out a dispute form. And you should get that in 5 to 10 business days. You can fill that out and send it back to us. It could take up to 90 days to get a refund if we could do that. It is international,'" says Carroll.

Without money to pay the rent, Carroll would have to move out.

"I have 3 kids in schools around this neighborhood. I need to stay in this neighborhood for my kids. School is not even out yet."

Carroll called the police but there wasn't much they could do.

We reached out to Comerica Bank, which is the bank behind Carroll's card, and got good news.

We just learned the bank called her this afternoon and told her she's going to get a new card and that $1,600 will be refunded immediately.
