Chandler Ostrich Festival recovers after harsh weather

Posted: Updated:

The Chandler Ostrich Festival had to shut down Friday because of bad weather for the first time in its 25 year history.

Vendors and clean up crews spent Saturday morning picking up the pieces.

"I get here this morning, it's all blown's a brand new tent that's on the ground," said Anthony Miller, a vendor.

Strong wind and heavy rain tore their tents apart Friday.

"These were the poles holding up my signs and the wind just bent them like they were plastic," said Bob Tanenbaum, a jewelry vendor.

But these vendors showed up early Saturday to clean the mess that mother nature made.

"It ended up as a big mangled metal ball we ended up having to go to Sam's club and the Sam's club employees there were like, 'Why's everybody coming in here and buying new tents today?' and they said, 'Well the weather wreaked havoc on us.' They said, 'We've sold more than 50 tents in the last two hours'," said Marie Brown, a T-shirt vendor.

The mud was the biggest problem at the Ostrich Festival Saturday, so crews came out and put saw dust down on the ground so nobody slipped.

All of the rides and temporary structures were also inspected to make sure they were safe for use after the storm.

"[The ostriches] were running around, pretty much chasing each other, sitting down, getting back up, and running around chasing each other. I don't know if that's normal behavior or not," said Brown.

Officers and firefighters worked to get everyone out of harms way on Friday. No one was hurt and all scheduled events took place Saturday.
