Atlanta police say a 15-year-old suspected of stealing an East Point police car has been taken into custody after a standoff lasting several hours.
According to East Point police, they noticed a car driving at a high rate of speed early Wednesday morning. Units pulled the car over and took the driver into custody after a scuffle. The 15-year-old was a passenger in the car and was put in the squad car, and at some point got into the front seat and drove off.
They say they recovered the stolen police car at Chicamauga Avenue and Mozley Park in southwest Atlanta, and the teen barricaded himself in his mother's home on Gideons Drive. He reportedly refused to talk to police and his own family.
"I spoke to one of our negotiators. They tried to make contact with them. They had a device – a phone – they can throw to someone to talk to him, but he didn't make any attempt to talk us to, so there was no conversation between our officers and the suspect once inside of the house," said Sgt. Greg Lyon of the Atlanta Police Department.
Police say they used multiple rounds of tear gas to apprehend the teen.
Authorities said that the teen is being a considered a suspect in several armed robberies in East Point, Fulton County, Coweta County and Atlanta.
