Wrong-way crash injures mother and daughter

Posted: Updated:

A crash near Interstate 17 and Dixeleta left a mother of five and her 13-year-old daughter with serious injuries around 3 a.m. Monday.

The mother and daughter were heading to the airport for a spring break trip to Washington, D.C., but instead of going on the school trip, they ended up in hospitals.

On Wednesday, the victim's husband spoke out about his wife and daughter's condition, as well as well wishes for the family that came via text message.

"My 13-year-old daughter is laying in a bed with a shattered leg, busted wrist..my wife is laying in .... yeah I'm not happy," said Bo Molzan.

41-year-old Johnny Bonnie, is suspected of driving south in the northbound lane of I-17 and crashing his jeep into the victim's Nissan Versa.

The 13-year-old is recovering from injuries to her limbs at Phoenix Children's Hospital and is expected to be okay.  Her mother is at John C. Lincoln Hospital -- and there is no surgery to fix the damage to her brain from the crash.

For injuries that she sustained, there is no procedure, no operations, no fancy medical technology that can fix it," said Bo.

Two days after the crash, she's still unconscious.

"She is making progress hour by hour," said Bo.  "If it's the slightest little thing, it's progress and that's what we're focused on right now."

Molzan describes her as a soccer woman, a career woman, and a strong person.  Right now, he's counting on that strength and his family's faith.

"It's either the grace of the lord and my wife's strength herself heals and fixes it and does what it can do and that's the only hands its in," he said.

According to Department of Public Safety officers, Bonnie showed obvious signs of impairment, but his blood alcohol level has not been released yet.  He's facing charges of aggravated assault and criminal damage.
