Pope Francis: First Latin American Pope

Posted: Updated:

Is Pope Francis the man to turn around a Catholic Church dealing with dwindling numbers, continuing sex abuse scandals and calls for reform by some members?

There are more than a billion Catholics around the world, including 100,000 in the Phoenix Diocese, now look to him as their religious leader.

So who exactly is Pope Francis?  He's 76-years-old Jorge Bergoglio, a native of Argentina.  He is the first ever Pope from Latin America and the first Jesuit, but his views are staunchly orthodox and very much like his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.

He's anti-abortion, anti-contraception and anti-gay marriage.

But Pope Francis is also well known for his commitment to the poor and the fact that he cooks his own meals -- and he even used to take the bus to work everyday.

Another interesting fact is that Pope Francis only has one lung, having had it removed when he was a teenager because of an infection.

Many people are talking about the fact that Pope Francis is the first Latin American Pope -- a place where the Catholic religion is growing -- and that is not lost on Hispanic Catholics here in the valley.
