MCSO: Elderly targeted by mail, phone scams

Posted: Updated:

Elderly people are warned to be weary if they're notified they've won some type of lottery, inheritance or even Publisher's Clearing House, according to Mohave County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say elderly people are being targeted by scams that request you send them money in order to receive your winnings.

These scammers sometimes pressure or threaten the person into sending them money.

Another scam deputies have seen is when people attempt to open account using their personal information.

For example, deputies say a person in Mohave Valley reported receiving a call from a credit card company asking him to verify some information for an application.

The person didn't apply for a credit card and refused to give his personal information.

Deputies would like to caution residents not to give out personal information or send money.

If you suspect fraud, call your local law enforcement office.
