ATLANTA -

An attorney says city of Atlanta managers made a mistake by firing three workers but are "too proud" to admit it. Longtime city supervisor Gayla Dodson and two of her subordinates, Octavia Swainson and Patricia Sanders, were fired for allegedly drinking alcohol on the job, but they claim they were consuming energy drinks.

In a termination hearing on Friday, Sanders said that the three workers drank a 5 Hour Energy drink at the rear of her vehicle at 10 a.m. A surveillance camera captured the incident, which occurred during a break at a city training session. Dodson is also seen holding a juice bottle.

Another worker in the parking lot claimed that he saw alcohol being poured into the juice bottle.

The defense attorney called another employee who was nearby in the parking who claimed that he didn't see any alcohol.

The fired workers' attorney said the case, which she said lacked sufficient evidence, had damaging consequences for the veteran employees.

The workers all submitted to a breathalyzer, which came back with 0.00 results.

The Civil Service Board will weigh the testimony and can overturn the firing of Sanders and Swainson. Because she is under a different classification, Dodson must go to court in order to get her job back.
