Former Hayden fire chief accused of theft

HAYDEN, Ariz. -

A former fire chief was arrested on suspicion of theft and later confessed to stealing money and chainsaws, according to Pinal County Sheriff's deputies.

37-year-old Charles Vega, a former fire chief in Hayden, Ariz., was arrested and charged with theft and trafficking in stolen property.

Vega allegedly stole money from a Hayden dance fundraiser and spent the cash on things for the fire station and personal use.

Deputies say he tried to replenish the funds by selling chainsaws stolen from Asarco Mine Company.
