Lehigh County Apartment Fire Kills 4

Posted: Updated:

Police have confirmed at least four deaths in an apartment fire in Emmaus, Lehigh County.

One witness said the fire on South Fifth Street started on the first floor and then quickly spread to the roof within minutes.

Firefighters say the call came in around 11:53 a.m. to 36 and 38 S. Fifth Street.

Witnesses described the fire as stubborn, forcing firefighters to battle it as late as 6 p.m.

Neighbors say the building housed at least five apartment units and used to be a funeral home before it was converted into residential living.

We talked to several witnesses including who helped keep some of the victims warm by giving them jackets once they got outside.

Fire officials confirmed the fatalities late Sunday night but did not release the names of the victims as next of kin were not yet notified.

The Red Cross is assisting at least two families left homeless from this fire.

Fire investigators are searching for a cause.  FOX29 will update this story as more information becomes available.
