Tucson man sentenced for attacking estranged wife

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson man accused of attacking his estranged wife with a large knife has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Pima County prosecutors say 68-year-old Jerry William Cole pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon last month.

The Arizona Daily Star says the couple was in the process of divorcing after a 42-year marriage at the time of the June 3 incident.

Court documents show Cole's estranged wife was moving personal items out of their house with two friends and when she went to give Cole a goodbye hug.

Cole allegedly grabbed her neck, swung her around, pulled out the folding knife and began attacking her.

Authorities say the woman was cut on her throat, cheek and wrist but survived the attack.
