TEMPE, Ariz. -

A woman was attacked while walking alone at night near Mill Avenue. Her alleged attacker was placed under arrest and killed himself Saturday night while in jail.

Tempe police say he raped the woman just days after being released from prison. He served about two years for aggravated assault charges.
Police say 23-year-old Lane Halona killed himself Saturday night in jail after he was arrested for allegedly raping a woman just west of the Mill Avenue district on March 17.

"I know it's not the best thing, but I definitely am guilty of walking alone at night," said Jaclyn Samatchia.

Young women we spoke to in Tempe Sunday night say they often put themselves in what they know is a dangerous situation.

"Yeah, of course, I do. If no one's around, what am I gonna do," said Jaclyn Glover.

"When I am walking home by myself, it's a stupid decision and I always get really paranoid," said Devin Conley.

Police say Halona attacked his victim as she walked home from work at around 4:30 a.m. on March 17.

He allegedly hit her in the head, took her to the ground and violently raped her.

During the attack, he apparently passed out and that's when the victim ran home and called her fiance.

"It can happen anywhere, it takes a very short amount of time and one dark corner. It's sad, but it's true," said Samatchia.

Police say the victim and her fiance returned to the scene and found Halona asleep.

Police arrived and took him into custody.  While Halona is no longer a threat, this serves as reminder to stay alert and try to avoid walking alone at night.

"Even with a couple girls, I feel a little more comfortable, at least it's a group and you know someone's gonna do something if they see it," said Glover.

The victim was left with bruises and gashes all over her body, but a week later, she is physically recovering.
