Aurora man charged in ‘smash and grab’ robberies

AURORA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

St. Charles and Aurora police using GPS surveillance have arrested a 39-year-old Aurora man suspected in a string of "smash and grab" burglaries in the area, police announced Monday.

Mark E. Swienton, of the 1300 block of Monomoy Street, was arrested Friday after officers conducting surveillance watched him throw a large rock through the front window of the NAPA Auto Parts Store in St. Charles. Swienton was taken into custody at the scene by Aurora Police officers, officials said.

According to police, the Aurora Police Department has been investigating numerous "smash and grab" burglaries in the past two weeks, and that surveillance videos showed a man driving an older model Chevrolet Prism with body damage to the left rear and missing a right rear hubcap.

An Aurora officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched that description and a court order for a tracking device was issued for the vehicle, police said.

At 10 p.m. Friday, Aurora officers conducted surveillance on the suspect using the tracking device and at about 10 p.m. watched Swienton throw a rock through the St. Charles NAPA Auto Parts store window on Third Street and enter the business through the broken window. Officers entered the building and ordered Swienton to the ground. Swienton, police said, resisted arrest by pushing and striking the two officers before being taken into custody.

Swienton was transported first to Delnor Hospital for treatment of minor cuts and bruises, then to the St. Charles Police Department where he was booked and processed, police said.

Bail was set at $130,000 on the burglary charge, and he was given an April 3 court date.

According to police, Swienton is on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections for burglary.

The St. Charles Police Department said it is investigating another smash and grab from last week at the Valley Spring Auto Spa, 3255 W. Main St., to determine if there is a connection with Swienton. A cash drawer and money were taken in that burglary, police said.
