Man expecting Internet date robbed and stuffed in trunk

HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A south suburban man thought he was driving to northwest Indiana to pick up a woman he met on a dating website, but instead found himself locked in a trunk after she and another man kidnapped him at gunpoint.

A federal judge on Wednesday found probable cause against Diamond Toney, 19, and Dedrick Bufkin, 20, both of Merrillville, Ind., after they did not fight a probable cause affidavit filed against them in U.S. District Court in Hammond, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

The affidavit claims Toney met the victim, identified only as K.B., on the dating website on March 17. After chatting for about three days, the two agreed to meet and Toney asked if K.B., a Sauk Village resident, would pick her up at the corner of Whitcomb Street and 73rd Avenue in Merrillville because she didn't have a car and wasn't comfortable giving him her address.

K.B. showed up on the morning of March 20 and found Toney and Bufkin pointing a gun at him through his window, according to the affidavit.

Bufkin and Toney then tied K.B. up, stole his wallet, $100 in cash and a cell phone, then locked him in the trunk, where they kept him for about four to five hours as they plotted other robberies and stopped at a gas station, grocery and other stores. They eventually let him go, telling him where he could find his keys.

K.B. then called police, who identified Toney from her picture and found both her and Bufkin at Toney's house, where they were arrested.

The two, being held without bond, are scheduled to be arraigned April 23.
