Judges hear GOP redistricting map challenge

Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) - A trial in a civil suit brought by Republican voters who claim the state's new legislative maps were illegally drawn up to give Democrats a better chance of winning seats in the state Legislature has wrapped up after five days of testimony.
Lawyers gave their closing arguments Friday in a case against the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission and then were peppered with questions by the three federal judges hearing the case.

The questions showed the judges wondered whether the maps were drawn free of political considerations.
Lawyers for the GOP voters are trying to prove the commission's two Democrats and one Independent froze out the two Republicans and illegally put unequal numbers of people in some districts.
Lawyers for the commission deny that happened.
There's no timetable for a verdict.
