Whitemarsh Township Police Warn of Roving Scam Artists

Posted: Updated:

"I saw something posted on face book," said Courtney Daley. She's one of many neighbors in Whitemarsh Township concerned about what police are calling gypsy activity.

"They said to be careful about people who were coming to do contracting on your house," said Daley. She is now keeping a watchful eye on not just her children and other neighborhood kids but suspicious people police say are lurking around.

Daley said,""You do hear about scams like that sometimes. So you're always careful when somebody's knocking on your door."

Police said the transients usually pose as contractors claiming to do roof repairs, driveway work or other handy jobs. They approach people and appear to try to make a deal to do work that never gets done but they get paid for it.

"I've been hearing about things like that all my life so it's not surprising that's it's still going on. But I always think it's awful," said Susan Fine.

They'll approach anyone hoping they'll fall for it. But police are particularly concerned about the elderly being targeted and swindled out of lots of money.

Gary Voros said, "I hope people are aware and get the proper verification from these people."
