SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - The FBI says a former Cochise County detention officer is in custody in connection with a drug case.

Federal authorities say 31-year-old Mark Melgoza is accused of possession with intention to distribute controlled substances.

The county Sheriff's Department says it received a tip that Melgoza allegedly was involved with illegal drugs.

The department asked the FBI to launch an investigation and about 300 pounds of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine allegedly was found in Melgoza's home.

They say Melgoza was arrested Thursday and resigned from the sheriff's department on Friday.

FBI Special Agent Manuel Johnson says the agency's investigation is ongoing.

Authorities didn't immediately know Friday if Melgoza has an attorney yet.

Statement by Cochise County Sheriff Dannels

We, as an organization, cannot and will not tolerate a violation of the law by members of this office or the public that we serve. Being a role model for our children and our communities is so important, and once we lose the public trust it becomes much more difficult to reclaim. The circumstances in this case suggest that Mr. Melgoza is incapable of maintaining that public trust and has compromised the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics which required him to keep his private life unsullied, to maintain his honor and integrity, and to never engage in acts of corruption. It is obvious that Mr. Melgoza can no longer represent this office or serve as a Detention Officer. Mr. Melgoza has resigned as of today from the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.
