Phoenix police investigate string of cockfighting cases

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

April is National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month and Phoenix police are talking about a growing problem: cockfighting.

Over the last couple of months, police have received a number of calls about cockfighting.

Not only is it illegal, but the roosters have been found in horrible conditions.

On March 24, officers were called to a residence in the area of 64th Avenue and Van Buren Street in a response to gun shots being fired.

When they arrived at the scene, 10 to 15 people ran off in various directions.  Officers were able to detain several suspects and found numerous dead or severely injured roosters.

Three of the detained suspects were arrested.

On February 2, police say Jose Zapata was arrested for cockfighting, gambling and violating city ordinances at his apartment near 40th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

Officers received a tip about cockfighting in the area and when they arrived at the scene, they found what turned out to be cockfighting in progress.

Four dead and 13 live roosters, along with many chickens were found behind the apartment.

Zapata was booked on several felony and misdemeanor charges.

The Arizona Humane Society was called to assist in both of these cases.
