Woman tries to smuggle pork products through Port of Mariposa

NOGALES, Ariz. -

Border Patrol officers catch people trying to smuggle marijuana into the U.S. frequently, but Monday they found a much different prohibited product hidden in a cereal box.

A woman was fined after Pork products were found hidden in a cereal box in a car traveling through the Port of Mariposa.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers referred a woman driving a vehicle with Utah license plates for an additional inspection as she attempted to enter the U.S.

Officers say the woman told them she had nothing to declare.

A CBP agriculture canine searched the vehicle and alerted its officer to a cereal box with nearly three pounds of pork products wrapped in a towel.

The pork was seized and destroyed and the driver was fined for failure to declare the prohibited agriculture product.

Travelers can be fined up to $1000 on the spot if they don't declare prohibited items. The items are confiscated and destroyed to eliminate the chance of spreading plant and animal pests or diseases.
