CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man captured in a police sting trying to lure a 12-year-old girl into his pickup in the South Side Brighton Park neighborhood was sentenced to two years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to child luring.

On Nov. 7, 2012, at about 7:30 a.m., Alberto Rangel, then 38, pulled up alongside the girl in and started talking to her as she walked to school in the 2700 block of West 38th Street, according to Chicago Police.

Rangel then gave the girl his phone number and asked her to call him, but the girl told school administrators, who contacted police. Area Central detectives devised a sting operation in which an undercover officer, posing as the girl, contacted Rangel via text message to set up a rendezvous, according to police.

Rangel was arrested on Nov. 24 when he showed up to meet the girl. He was charged with one felony count of child luring, and misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to police.

On Monday, Rangel, of the 3000 block of South Hamlin Avenue, pleaded guilty to luring and Judge Stanley Sacks sentenced him to two years in prison, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
