Cook County polls running smoothly, but few are voting

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The good news, according to Cook County Clerk David Orr, is that there have been very few problems at the polls Tuesday morning throughout suburban Cook County.

At the same time, "We'd like a few more voters," said Orr, who has been out in the field through the morning.

There's been more activity in places such as Robbins and Dolton, which saw "an early rush" of voters, but turnout has slowed down since then, Orr said.

And while it's "hard to tell" what voting turnout will be by the end of the day, "it does appear pretty slow," he said about 11:15 a.m.

Orr explained that one factor that could make projecting voter turnout difficult is that in some precincts, people have already taken advantage of the opportunity to vote early.

Orr said that with nearly 2,000 polling places and 10,000 judges, there are bound to be issues, such as judges not showing up and technical issues with ballots and machines, but what few issues there have been Tuesday morning, such as one touch screen that wasn't working and another screen that hadn't been plugged in properly, were soon resolved.

By and large, the judges were in place, the machines functioning, the last-minute electioneering taking place outside the polling places was being done at the proper distance, and everyone was behaving, he said.

"The biggest problem one polling place had," he said, was that the election judges' badges couldn't be found, but that was also remedied quickly. Orr said "nothing significant" had caused any problems at the suburban polls so far Tuesday morning.

Polls will be open until 7 p.m.
