Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) If you're sneezing, rubbing your eyes, dealing with a stuffy nose or sinus pressure you are not alone. This is a bad week for allergy sufferers. reports tree and weed pollen counts are in the "very high" range in much of Southern California this week. Grasses are in the "moderate" range.

Allergist Robert Eitches from Cedars Sinai Medical Center explained to Studio 11 LA that his office is especially busy this week and that Allergic Rhinitis is one of the top reasons people miss work or school.

How can you tell if what you have is a cold or allergies? "A cold is a once or twice a year occurrence, and typically lasts less than a week; allergies tend to be never-ending, and often involve itching of eyes, nose or skin."

To prevent allergy symptoms Dr. Eitches suggests staying indoors from 5 am-10 am when pollen counts are highest. He also suggests wood or tile flooring in your home, and washing your hair daily to rid it of pollen.

For immediate relief, antihistamines like Benadryl, Claritin or Zyrtec can block your body's inflammatory response to your allergy triggers. Other medications including decongestants and inhalers can open airways to the lungs and sinuses.

For longer term prevention, allergy testing and shots can also be useful for some people, but this requires several trips to the doctor. In the future, oral drops may allow allergy sufferers to get desensitization therapy in their own homes.
