Ex-Ga. police major arrested in child porn sweep

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A retired coastal Georgia police major who was arrested in a child pornography sweep has bonded out of jail.

Former Savannah-Chatham police major Douglas Burkhalter was held on $10,000 bond after being arrested on a charge of computer child exploitation. He was released from the Chatham County jail Thursday.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/ZjXjXa ) 70-year-old Burkhalter was arrested for material authorities found at his home Wednesday. Burkhalter was 1 of 98 people authorities identified following a three month investigation titled, "Operation Guarding Innocence."

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead says the probe was the largest of its kind to be executed in Georgia. The GBI Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force has made 976 arrests in Georgia since 2002.

A call to Burkhalter's attorney was not immediately returned.
