Rick's Pick: Jackie Robinson Day

Westwood, CA -

My pick today was for #42! Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers broke the color barrier in baseball on this day back in 1947. Playing first base, he became the first African-American to play Major League Baseball. He went on to win rookie of the year at the end of his first season. He ended his career batting .311 and slugging 137 home runs. He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

A beautiful mural of Jackie Robinson produced by Mike Sullivan was unveiled yesterday at UCLA where Jackie played. The Dodgers host the Padres tonight at Dodger Stadium and Jackie's widow Rachel will be in attendance. The number 42 adorns the field and dugouts.
