Second man charged in attempted Logan Square robbery

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The second of two men who police say tried to rob a Logan Square store at gunpoint, only to be fought off by the bat-wielding owner, was charged with attempted murder on Wednesday.

Keith Owens, 51, of the 7400 block of North Cedar Avenue in Richfield, Minn., was charged with one count each of attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm, police said.

Owens and Cornell Mack, 53, are accused of attempting to rob the store in the 2200 block of North Western Avenue about 5:30 p.m. on April 9, police said.

The owner fended the armed men off with a baseball bat, despite being shot in the attack, family members said.

The 62-year-old owner, Luis Quizhpe, was shot in the leg after struggling with one of them, police said.

Quizhpe started swinging a baseball bat at the gun-wielding robber -- defending the novelty store he's run for 28 years.

"I'm so lucky," he told the Sun-Times said from his hospital bed. "It was like the Fourth of July. I just heard lots of noise. Pow, pow, pow... I was so mad at them."

The robbery, caught on store surveillance, shows one of the robbers holding a gun to Quizhpe's brother-in-law, who was also inside Quizhpe's Gifts and Sports.

The elder Quizhpe can be seen grabbing a baseball bat and swinging as the robber fires continuous rounds at him at close range. Just one bullet pierced Quizhpe's leg.

Still Quizhpe kept on swinging, even after being shot, and even as one of the robbers hopped back over the counter and shot at him again at close range. The video captured Quizhpe's brother-in-law hitting one of the robbers with an extension rod, then grabbing a stool and throwing it at him. Just after the robber had hopped over the counter to escape, Quizhpe's brother-in-law can be seen throwing a fire extinguisher at him on the way out.

Mack, who suffered a gunshot wound during the robbery, was charged April 11 with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and discharge of a firearm, police said.

He is being held on a $750,000 bond, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.
