ATLANTA -

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, security is expected to be tighter than usual for many events occurring this weekend in the metro area.

The big weekend got off to an early start on Thursday night as Taylor Swift performed in front of a packed Philips Arena, and on Friday night, she'll do it again.

Security will be tight and people heading to the concert are urged to show up early so they won't miss any of the show.

Rene Propes, the top commander of the uniform division in the Atlanta Police Department, said that people will see increased police presence at weekend events.

"We are responding to I would say an increased number of suspicious packages, suspicious individuals, which is good, which means people are listening to what we are saying which is if you see something say something, said Propes.

The Dogwood Festival begins at Piedmont Park on Friday afternoon. More than a 100,000 people are expected for the annual rite of spring event, which has been an Atlanta tradition for 77 years.

Over at Candler Park the Sweetwater 420 Festival kicks off on Friday. It too runs all weekend

Professional golf returns to Gwinnett's Sugarloaf Country Club as the champions' tour brings in some of the all-time greats of the game, such as Tom Watson.

People attending the weekend events are urged to check the websites before heading out to make sure they don't bring anything that's not allowed, and be ready for a heavier police presence and screening process.
