DETROIT (WJBK) -

The right ingredients are just part of the recipe for a good beer and a successful company.  At Atwater Brewery in Detroit, it's also about the people, the equipment and the business climate.

"Michigan is absolutely at the forefront of brewing in the Midwest and has established a name for itself nationwide," said Jason Schrider, director of operations at Atwater Brewery.

He is pleased the Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Liquor Control Commission want to streamline what some call outdated regulations, making it easier for breweries and wineries to make and sell their products and easier for consumers to buy them.

"The local movement is the big movement now, particularly in Michigan and in the Detroit area.  So I think fostering that local movement is important.  It's what the consumer wants," Schrider said.

The efforts underway in Lansing concern some such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving.  Angel Harris is a victim services specialist with MADD.

"We ask the people to look at not just the money aspect of this -- who's making more, who's spending more, who's going to save more -- we're looking at saving lives and increasing the awareness of what this might do for the community socially and for our youth," she said.

However, according to Drink Michigan, the state is already ranked fifth in the nation for the most breweries, microbreweries and brew pubs.

"You're seeing such a nice boom in niche manufacture, which is really what we do, and these are solid jobs with a decent pay scale, and they tend to last.  We're kind of re-establishing not only the manufacture roots in Detroit, but the brewing roots in Detroit," Schrider said.
