Forest officials take comment on thinning project

Posted: Updated:

SHOW LOW, Ariz. (AP) - Officials with the U.S. Forest Service are making a stop in Show Low on Tuesday to gather comment on a massive forest thinning project.

The agency recently released a draft environmental impact statement for the Four Forest Restoration Initiative. The plan is to restore a 2.4 million-acre area long the Mogollon Rim to a natural fire regime, reduce wildfire threats and create sustainable forest industries.

The Montana-based contractor plans to convert the timber into things like laminate wood panels.

Tuesday's meeting is scheduled at the Navajo County Public Health Services District building.

The last in a series of open house meetings on the project will be held in Flagstaff on May 15.
