Family gets help to bury toddler killed by burglar bar door

Posted: Updated:

A FOX 5 viewer has reached out to help with funeral costs for a toddler killed by a burglar bar door.

Talasia Hamm was playing in front of a vacant southwest Atlanta apartment when the door fell on her and crushed her skull last Wednesday.

To compound the unimaginable loss, Talasia's mother, Shantarian Hamm, says the family can't afford to bury the child.

"I don't have the money, but we are doing whatever we can to get it up. Whatever we can," Shantarian Hamm said.

South Fulton County resident Paul Lee saw the story on FOX 5 and was compelled to help out.The United Way retiree started a non-profit organization in 2007 called Children's Burial Assistance. It has helped to bury 900 needy children since then.

"All of them touch us, but when I heard and saw -- you see sometimes when you see things. it has a different effect on you…When I saw the railing that had fallen on this really touched me," Lee said.

Lee talked with the mother of three and has agreed to help with funeral and burial expenses that will cost thousands of dollars. The 23-year-old mother is grateful.

"It's a blessing that somebody cares and somebody is there to try to help toward the funeral because a lot of times…in deaths, you don't get people who care," said Shantarian Hamm.

The family is still in need of additional funds for the burial. Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank under the "Talasia Hamm Fund."
