Officer shoots at alleged impaired man driving recklessly

PHOENIX -

Police say an officer shot at a man believed to be impaired by alcohol after the man rammed into multiple vehicles early Friday morning.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson says officers were making a traffic stop when a suspect turned into a random driveway near 35th Avenue and Camelback Road and ignored commands from officers to get out of his vehicle.

The suspect allegedly rammed into a police car and a resident's vehicle multiple times before managing to turn around in the front yard.

Thompson says an officer saw the suspect driving toward his partner, and that's when he fired shots at the suspect's vehicle.

The suspect didn't stop and rammed into four other vehicles. Thompson says the suspect then took a turn too fast and collided with the carport of another home.

Police say the suspect got out of the car and started running away, but was taken into custody shortly afterward.

No one was injured during the incident.

Thompson says they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

There was heavy police presence in the area because an officer was involved in the shooting.
