Queens motel rebuilds after Sandy

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

With transformers blowing all around us, live wires electrifying the swollen flood waters, Jamaica Bay's waves rippling over cross bay boulevard, and car alarms momentarily piercing through the whistling winds, one thing slipped my mind at the Surfside Motel in Howard Beach, Queens, once Superstorm Sandy had finally passed by us: to return my room key.

Six months later, we were back and we were happy to see that so is the Surfside Motel, which is looking better than before the storm.

Motel manager Anthony Vicari has been working virtually around the clock since October. Crews have transformed floors from carpet to epoxy and walls from plaster to stone, making them a little more waterproof just in case the surfside gets blindsided again.

Reconstruction cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Managers say they got virtually no help from FEMA or anyone else in the federal government.

But now the surfside, turned upside down for a time, is right-side up.

New York City women are tired of hearing vile things yelled at them as they walk down the street. Many women are going public about street harassment and catcalling. Some even post picture of their offenders on social media. Founded in 2005, Hollaback! is an anti-harassment organization giving women a platform to do just that.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that school start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. for middle and high school students.  This recommendation is based on biology.  Pediatricians say adolescents can have trouble falling asleep before 11 p.m.  Therefore in order for teens to get a full eight hours of sleep the school day should start later.

Alec Baldwin took on a new role at the U.S. Open - the actor played a star athlete, snagging a stray ball that flew into the stands. Baldwin was sitting in the front row behind the baseline Monday night when an out-of-bounds shot from Maria Kirilenko sailed over Maria Sharapova and bounced into the seats. He flawlessly fielded the ball on one hop.
