Sorry Siri, I'm Leaving. Google Now Is On iOS!

Posted: Updated:

Apple fans have a reason to be elated this morning as one of the best "apps" in search is now available for iOS. If you already know what Google Now is, you'll want to head over to the App Store and download Google Search. If you don't know what it is, I'll tell you why you need this in your life right now!

Google Now, is what Siri should be, right now. Google Now (goes by the name Google Search on iOS) is what is known as "predictive search." Using data from your Gmail inbox, Google searches, and much more. It taps into data from so many different facets of our online existence and seeks to unify it all into a service which attempts to make our lives easier. Now, I know this is going to scare some people but it shouldn't- it's completely voluntary which means you opt-in to the service, unlike some others which don't allow you to opt-in to services, only opt-out which often means you're "in" by default which is the wrong philosophy in my opinion. Beyond that, with the amount of data collecting that is going on today, unless you stay completely off the grid, your information is being gathered. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be vigilant about how your data is being collected, just that this time it isn't worthy of raising any red flags.

Google Now delivers information to you without having to query a search and it could be things like movie release dates with local showtimes based on your having searched previously for information on, say, Iron Man. The service/app also learns your comings and goings and will have a card waiting for you in the morning and when you leave work to go home which shows you your commute time and driving conditions. There are more info cards you can look forward to which also includes weather, flights, public transportation, package tracking/delivery and more. The only caveats here are these: No push notifications yet which means you'll have to go into Google Search and swipe up in order to get to it and not all of the "cards" found on Android are included in this current iteration on iOS. The cards which aren't included are: Zillow, concerts, research topics, nearby events, airline boarding pass, activity summary, Fandango and events.

I have to tell you that I've been using Google Now on Android since it first became available to the public and it's one of the first things I look at every morning. I see my weather and traffic information right there at a glance without having to go to more than one app to get it, or initiate a request for the info. You can download and install at this link here.
