Wild student brawl at Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station caught on camera

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

A wild brawl involving local students was caught on camera. The chaos broke out in the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro station around 4 p.m. Friday as kids were heading home from school.

FOX 5 has learned it may be the result of an ongoing rivalry between McKinley Technology and Woodrow Wilson High School students.

Metro Transit Police hold daily conference calls with officers from D.C. police and school resources police, and officials say they were aware of the potential for violence.

"There was a conference call on Friday prior to this fight at Gallery Place where we were advised and we actually had additional officers at Gallery Place when the fight broke out," says Metro spokesperson Dan Stessel.

The brawl was so large that even with the extra officers in place, backup had to be called in. In the end, no serious injuries were reported, but about half a dozen juveniles were arrested.

Investigators are looking into whether Friday's incident may have been retaliation for a fight at Union Station on Thursday.

Ivan Cloyd with the Alliance of Concerned Men says he has been taking calls from concerned parents.

"The parents are afraid to send their kids to school, let alone ride the Metro," says Cloyd.

Stessel says while police will continue to do their part, principals and parents need to step up as well.

"We can continue to arrest these kids, but if they get released to their parents and nothing happens after that, the behavior is only going to continue,” he says.

DENVER - Technically, it's still summer for a few more days but it's snowing already in Colorado! The Denver area saw a dusting Wednesday and could get a bit more snow as a cold front moves through. Fortunately for residents there, this is just temporary and they'll enjoying 70 degree days again soon.
