CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mayor Emanuel surprised a Chicago teacher with a special honor Wednesday morning, recognizing her outstanding work in education.

Emanuel presented Lindblom Math and Science Academy's Elizabeth Copper with the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching Wednesday morning.

Copper teaches Forensics and AP Environmental classes to juniors and seniors at Lindblom. The Calumet Park teacher is also a faculty advisor for the Go Green environmental club and brought an aquaphonics system to the school's greenhouse.

"For a student to succeed, we need everyone to be involved, from principals to parents to teachers. Ms. Copper is an inspiring example of the incredible teachers we have across this city, who dedicate every minute of every day towards supporting our students and providing them with an education that opens the door to their future," Mayor Emanuel said. "She opens her students' eyes to the world around them, and I congratulate her on this well-deserved honor."

Copper is one of 10 winners chosen by the Golden Apple Foundation out of 510 other nominees from Illinois.

Golden Apple President and CEO Dominic Belmonte and founder and Michael Koldyke also visited Lindblom to present Copper with her award on Wednesday. The foundation has honored teachers who help build a stronger, better-educated citizenry, every year since 1986.

Four other Chicago teachers were recognized this year, hailing from Lindblom, TEAM Englewood Community Academy, Walter Payton College Prep and Mount Carmel High School.
