Adam Yauch Park: Brooklyn playground renamed for the late Beastie Boy

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Brooklyn playground where the late Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys learned to ride a bike has now been renamed in his honor.

Dozens of fans, journalists, neighborhood residents, friends, and family packed the former Palmetto Playground on Columbia Place in Brooklyn Heights for the ceremonial renaming on the first anniversary of the artist's death.

Adam Yauch, 47, died of salivary gland cancer on May 4, 2012.

His mother, Frances Yauch, and fellow Beastie Boy Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz were among several people to speak at the ceremony.

Beastie Boy Michael "Mike D" Diamond did not attend, according to a report.

The park was known as State Street Park when Yauch was growing up nearby. (Later it was renamed Palmetto Playground.) Yauch was 3 when his family moved onto State Street, just a few blocks from the playground, his mother said. His father taught him to ride a bike there.

One of the band's big hits was "No Sleep Til Brooklyn," which features the lyric: "Born and bred in Brooklyn the USA / They call me Adam Yauch but I'm MCA."

Yauch was also a filmmaker and activist. Local officials cited his work with the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits as one reason Yauch deserved to be recognized with his name on the park.

The playground includes basketball courts, a community garden, a greenhouse, a small fitness area, an open play space, and a dog run, according to the Parks Department website.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
