Tips to prevent sexual assault

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

An estimated 9 in 10 victims of sexual assault know their attacker.  So how can you more aware of the problem, and what can you do to reduce the risk of it happening to you?  Good Day Atlanta's Tacoma Perry explains.

Ann Burdges, executive director of the Gwinnett Sexual Assault and Children's Advocacy Center, told FOX 5 most people still have a stereotypical perception of the crime.  She says victims often think an attacker will be a masked stranger jumping out of the woods, but most often, sexual violence comes from someone who is not a stranger.

Burdges says the key to prevention is knowing exactly what constitutes sexual assault.

"Whether it's having your body marked up, whether it's being sexually assaulted, or whether it's being groped or battered--- that's not okay," she explained.

Burdges says if you think you've been a victim of sexual assault, report it right away, even if you don't remember everything that may have happened to you.
