The newest member of the Arizona Cardinals is getting nationwide attention for his past run-ins with drug use. That attention is coming in the form of a print ad.
He earned the nickname "Honey Badger" for what he did on the field. But what has happened to Tyrann Mathieu off the field is what got him in this ad for a Phoenix head shop.
"I didn't think that it would get this much of a response because you have to know something about football to even get it," says Greg Centrone, one of the owners of Bud's Glass Joint.
For those of who don't know the back story, Mathieu was kicked off LSU's football team last season for reportedly failing drug tests.
The ad, published in the New Times, welcomes Mathieu to Phoenix and then says "we have what you are looking for."
"Honestly I put the ad out to be funny," says Centrone. "Anybody that has a good sense of humor gets that it is just a joke. There is not even anything implying anything other than his picture and our ad."
Mathieu was drafted to the Cardinals in the third round of last month's NFL draft.
According to LA Times, the Cardinals aren't taking any chances. The team may require Mathieu to be drug tested regularly.
The people who put out this ad know a visit to the glass joint is highly unlikely.
"Obviously he is a great player, I think he is a great addition to the Cardinals and I just thought it was kind of fitting or funny."
We reached out to both the Cardinals and LSU for comment on the ad, but never heard back.
