NYC set to pass sick days plan, seen as key step

NEW YORK (AP) - A national push for paid sick days is poised to score a significant victory in New York City.

The City Council is expected to vote Wednesday to require businesses to provide sick leave to an estimated 1 million workers who don't have it now. About 300,000 more would get unpaid sick time, so they couldn't be fired for calling in sick.

A mayoral veto is expected, but so is an override.

Advocates see the New York measure as a watershed, though it wouldn't take effect for a year - and then only if the economy stays steady. The city would be the most populous place to approve such a law.

Critics fear it could burden small businesses. Opponents also say government should let employees and businesses set sick time arrangements.
