Iconic Lincolnwood steakhouse catches fire

Posted: Updated:
LINCOLNWOOD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A fire at a north suburban steakhouse early Wednesday morning damaged the kitchen and store room in the back of the restaurant, Pioneer Press is reporting.

The Lincolnwood Fire Department extinguished the blaze at Myron and Phil's Steakhouse at 3900 W. Devon Ave. by about 4:30 a.m., and no one was inside the restaurant at the time, Batallion Chief John Jaeger said.

"We don't know the cause, but the fire started in the rear storeroom," Jaeger said. "A part of the kitchen was damaged, but the rest of the restaurant did not catch on fire, despite there being widespread smoke damage."

Firefighters from neighboring Evanston, Skokie, Morton Grove, Niles and Des Plaines responded to the four-alarm fire along with Lincolnwood fire personnel.

Published reports indicate the restaurant's founder, Myron Freedman, also died overnight around 2:30 a.m. at the age of 95. The restaurant opened in 1971.

Myron and Phil's owner Mark Freedman couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday morning.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
