Suspect killed, 2 arrested in shootout at northern Illinois bank

RICHMOND, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

A deadly shootout in a bank parking lot happened in Richmond, Illinois near the Wisconsin border Friday morning.

There was high drama in the small town after bullets went flying in the Associated Bank parking lot where FBI agents had been tailing three men.

What happened next unfolded right in front of a worker across the street, who couldn't believe what he saw.

"I seen a bunch of FBI agents come running with machine guns out, firing at the car," the man told FOX 32 News.

This witness, who did not want us to show his face or use his name, said he heard so many shots coming from the Associated Bank parking lot that he couldn't even count them.

Another witness estimated hearing at least 15 to 20 shots fired at a silver car which smashed into a light pole trying to get away from the FBI.

"They start yelling for the guys to get on the ground and then they threw a flash bank grenade in there," he recalls.

The FBI said it has been following the suspects from Chicago but offered little more information, declining even to clarify if the suspects had fired any shots at agents or if a weapon was recovered from their car.

"Of the three suspects one was fatally shot, the other two were taken into custody," special FBI agent Joan Hyde said."

Hyde wouldn't explain why they were following the men, only saying, "That's part of an on-going criminal investigation."

The dead man was the driver. The FBI said there was no bank robbery and the suspects never entered the bank at all. Our witness said FBI agents had been waiting in vehicles in the bank parking lot.

Two nearby schools went on lockdown for about an hour, creating quite a scare for this town of about 2,000.

"Quite devastating for a small town like this," said high school groundskeeper Rich Holtz. "We don't see anything like this every day. It's more the suburbs that see stuff like that, so it's quite news for us out here."

No FBI agents were injured in the shootout, and the whole incident was over fairly quickly, but it was definitely the talk of the town.

The FBI says the suspects did not commit any crimes Friday between Chicago and Richmond and no charges had been previously filed against the men.

Under FBI protocol, agents only open fire when there's some immediate threat to themselves or the public. So, what prompted this shootout remains a mystery.
