Moms spend Mother's Day learning how to shoot guns

Posted: Updated:

A group of valley moms tapped into their instinct to protect on Mother's Day.

The women spent eight hours out at the Ben Avery Shooting Range taking a combat focus shooting course.

It's not where you would expect a mom to celebrate her special day: a shooting range in a the desert.

Among the group was Jennifer Manno.

"I'm pretty protective, I want to empower my daughter," said Manno.

Manno has a 21-year-old daughter and while she is familiar with guns, she decided she needed more knowledge in order to protect herself and her family.

She signed up for a Mother's Day combat focus shooting course.

"Your confidence in your skills will determine how fast you shoot," said Broussard.

The creator of the program, Omari Broussard, was in from San Diego and says more and more women are arming themselves.

"Mothers are in a special situation because if you look at it, you have a lot of at-home moms. They're home by themselves during the day while dad is out working or they're working moms and they're out running around doing things, so protecting themselves should be important, but it requires good training," said Broussard.

The point of the course is to teach mothers how to react when things get really intense.

"You need to get the confidence and the competence to use that tool. Okay, I can give you a bat, but if you've never swung it, if you've never seen that before, you don't know what to do with it," said John Able.

Able, an instructor with Phoenix Firearms Training, says students also learn basics like gun safety so that they feel ready to respond to any situation.
