Human remains found, could be connected to missing college student

Posted: Updated:

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has confirmed they have located human remains in a burned home. They are testing those remains to see if they belong to missing Middle Georgia State College student Jmaal Keyes.

They say the remains were collected Friday from a Hawkinsville home close to the residence of 17-year-old Robert Kane Rolison, who has been arrested and charged with Keyes' murder.

Keyes, 19, vanished on April 25, the same day the Hawkinsville home was apparently set on fire. He was a freshman at Middle Georgia State College.

Family friends say Keyes was a criminal justice major -- a studious, quiet young man who was very involved with his church, Destiny World Church in Austell.

Destiny World Church Senior Pastor Wilbur Purvis was with Keyes' family when they got the news that remains had been found.

"Honestly, I want to know why. I want to know what led up to all of that. That's the man side of me. As pastor, I want to bring closure to this family," Purvis said.

Rolison was dually enrolled in high school and the same college as Keyes.

Rolison had his first court appearance in Bleckly County on Sunday, where he formally heard the charges against him.
Police say tips as well as surveillance video led to the May 9 arrest of Rolison, but there's still no word yet on how Keyes was killed or why.
The GBI says DNA testing will be done to determine if the remains belong to Keyes.

"Jmaal's mother said, ‘None of that matters. We are where we are. We will forgive this person.' In fact, she said we cannot move on…until we forgive this person," Purvis said.

A private family memorial service for Keyes is scheduled for this weekend.
