PHOENIX -

A Phoenix teen has been presented with a lifesaving award. She jumped into action, taking the wheel from a driver who had lost consciousness.

13-year-old Brooke Gerlach was riding with a friend from soccer practice when suddenly the driver said she wasn't feeling well.

Susan Mulligan was driving. She thought she was going to throw up -- but instead passed out.

"I got up in the front seat as the car was moving and I pulled over to the far left lane and I stopped the car and I made sure that everyone was ok," says Brooke Gerlach.

"I was really scared but I'm really glad that everything turned out ok. I'm glad that I reacted the way that I did and of course I'm glad that Susan is ok."

Tuesday, Brooke and her friend Claire were honored by firefighters for their quick action to save a life.

Susan will make a full recovery. Brooke and Claire are now adjusting to becoming local celebrities at their middle school.
