The Phillies and former All-Star pitcher Carlos Zambrano have agreed to a minor-league deal, a source told Fox Sports.

Senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal tweeted the news Wednesday morning about the Phillies and the right-handed starter, formerly of the Chicago Cubs and last year with the Miami Marlins.

"And yes, that's Carlos Zambrano agreeing with #Phillies. Big Z. That guy!" Rosenthal reiterated.

The 6-foot-4-inch, 275-pound starter from Venezuela turns 32 on June 1. He reportedly agreed to terms last week with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, but never signed a contract, according to

In his 12-year career, Zambrano has a record of 132 wins and 91 losses with a 3.66 ERA. He won at least 13 games a season from 2003-2008.

He's a three-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger at the pitcher position, as he's a switch-hitter with 24 career home runs.

Last year in Florida, "Big Z" went 7-10 with a 4.49 ERA, allowing 123 hits and walking 75 over 132 innings while striking out 95. He appeared in 35 games, starting 20 of them.

The Phillies are searching for some help in their rotation, with Roy Halladay having shoulder surgery that puts him out of action for at least three months.

Zambrano broke in with the Cubs in 2001 when he was just 20 years old and started 16 games for them the next season.

Zambrano, who also goes by the nickname "El Toro," has a fiery demeanor that got him in trouble with a few different club managers. He was eventually moved to the bullpen in 2010 then traded after the 2011 season from Chicago to Miami for Chris Volstad last year.
