It was a heartbreaking weekend here in the valley as two first responders were killed in the line of duty in separate incidents.
One of them -- 29-year-old Phoenix police officer Daryl Raetz -- and the suspect is still on the loose.
It all took place near 51st Avenue and Thomas where a makeshift memorial is growing. People gathered there Sunday night to pay their respects.
Police say Raetz was arresting a suspected drunk driver in the area early Sunday morning when he was hit and killed by a hit and run driver.
As of Sunday night, authorities say the green Ford Expedition that hit the officer was found.
Daryl Raetz was with the department for six years.
"I honestly don't have the words to describe the sorrow in my heart of Daryl and his family.. he was one of Phoenix's finest.. one of our heroes," said Chief Daniel Garcia.
Raetz leaves behind a wife and daughter.
