A sport utility vehicle smashed through the front door of a JoAnn Fabrics store near Recker and Main Tuesday morning.
"I heard it when it hit the door, then it just kept going into the store, it just kept going even when I turned around to see it, it was still driving," says witness Sue Davis.
According to Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato, three customers and a store clerk were injured.
One customer, an 89-year-old woman, has life threatening injuries and is in surgery. The driver wasn't injured.
"People started screaming and there was just chaos everywhere so we started calling 911, the ambulance trying to get people there as soon as we can," says Davis.
The 78-year-old female driver may have meant to put the SUV in reverse instead of drive, then meant to hit the brake instead of the accelerator.
"Our sincere concerns are with the injured persons, and our priority remains the safety and well-being of our Team Members and customers," said a spokesperson for JoAnn Fabrics.
Landato says the driver won't face charges.
Investigators are trying to determine if the store is structurally sound to reopen.
