ROCHESTER, Mich. (WJBK) -

Girls on the Run is a YMCA program in schools all over the country.

"We cover different topics like gossiping and bullying and positive body image and eating healthy and having emotional health as well as physical health," said Jackie Kippen. "It's awesome skills that they learn, and then at the end of it to celebrate it all and this journey that they've been on and this commitment to themselves that they've made, we do this awesome, celebratory 5K."

"It really creates and ignites that passion in the girls to get out and just want to run," Webber Elementary Principal Sarah Manzo.

1,200 girls representing 70 schools from metro Detroit recently gathered on the campus on Oakland University in Rochester to run their final 5K. Not only have they developed into runners, but their self-esteem is skyrocketing.

The YMCA of Metro Detroit expects to enroll 2,000 girls for the upcoming school year. To register for the program, visit www.gotrdetroit.org.
