Douglas man accused of holding 2 women hostage

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Federal authorities say a Douglas man is accused of holding two Guatemalan sisters hostage, beating them and attempted to extort money from their family.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Wednesday that 34-year-old Alejandro Beltran is charged in a federal complaint with harboring people who aren't in the country legally for the purpose of private financial gain.

Douglas police received a call last Sunday afternoon from a person saying two adult Guatemalan sisters were being held against their will. The women were later found inside a travel trailer in north Douglas.

They claimed to have been held captive for nine days and Beltran allegedly forced them to contact their family and demand $10,000 for their release. Both women also claim they were beaten by Beltran, who was later arrested.
